A recent piece in TechRound highlights how major US AI players like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Runway are all doubling down on London, choosing it as a key hub for research, talent, and expansion.

The data backs it up:

  • 30% of Europe's new generative AI startups are based in London

  • London attracted $3.5B in AI VC funding in 2024, ranking 3rd globally

  • The city now hosts more AI companies than Paris and Berlin combined

So why London?

A powerful mix of world-class talent, proximity to European markets, relative regulatory flexibility, and a growing ecosystem effect that keeps attracting more innovation. Runway, the AI video generation startup valued at $5.3 billion after its $315 million Series E in February 2026, has chosen London as its European headquarters. They've committed over $200 million to the UK's AI sector by the end of 2028.

The reasons?

Proximity to European clients and access to research talent. It's the third time in under a year that a major US AI lab has made the same decision. OpenAI and Anthropic have also made significant expansions into London.

The big question isn't whether London is an AI leader in Europe… It's whether it can convert this momentum into a globally dominant ecosystem.
